Keep the Blue Sky All Winter: Bringing Daylight Indoors When the Days Get Short

When the days get short and the sky turns grey, a square E-Window skylight keeps a clear blue sky overhead. With drifting clouds, a 24-hour sunlight cycle, and Ra 98 color rendering, it brings an open, daylight feel to basements, interior rooms, and condos all autumn and winter.

Keep the Blue Sky All Winter: Bringing Daylight Indoors When the Days Get Short

Every year in Ontario the same quiet shift happens. The clocks change, the sun sets before dinner, and the grey of November settles over the city. By the time the snow arrives, many of us are commuting to work in the dark and heading home in the dark, and the bright, open feeling of a summer afternoon starts to feel very far away. The Cielo and Cielo Mini artificial skylights offer a different answer: a clear blue sky overhead, with angled light across the wall like sun slanting through a real skylight, whenever you want it, no matter what the weather is doing outside.

Cielo and Cielo Mini Artificial Skylights Two recessed 80W sky panels with a 30° angled sunlight effect, CRI Ra 90+, dimming, and Bluetooth control. Choose the Cielo for a fixed 8000K sky-white tone in the 3060 module size, or the Cielo Mini for tunable light from 1600K to 8000K.

The Season When Rooms Start to Feel Smaller

Short days change how a home feels. Rooms that felt bright and airy in July can feel closed in by December, especially the ones that never had much natural light to begin with: the basement family room, the interior hallway, the home office with no window, the kitchen with no outside view. Turning on more lamps helps a little, but ordinary lighting only fills a room. It does not make you feel like you are under an open sky.

That is the gap the Cielo family is designed to fill. Set into the ceiling, each panel brings the look of a clear blue sky to a room with no window or roof opening. Nano-structured optics scatter light the way the atmosphere does, reproducing the Rayleigh scattering effect that makes a real sky look blue, so the ceiling reads as an opening rather than a fixture.

  • Ideal for rooms with no window or roof opening
  • Gives a ceiling the look of a real skylight, without cutting through the roof
  • Keeps a clear-sky atmosphere in the room through autumn, winter, and every cloudy stretch in between

Angled Sunlight, Not Just a Blue Panel

A flat blue panel would only get you part of the way there. What gives the Cielo its depth is the angled light. Both models use a 30° forward-projection beam that washes across the nearest wall, the way sunlight slants in through a real skylight. That angled wash is what gives the sky its clarity, and it makes a windowless room feel as though daylight is arriving from somewhere.

Placement matters, and there is a simple rule for it. The distance from the wall (M) equals 1.7 times the distance from the top of the projected light down to the ceiling (H), so M = 1.7 x H. If you want the lit area to start 30 cm below the ceiling, place the unit about 51 cm from the wall, then adjust that distance to move the light up or down. On the Cielo, M is measured from the outer edge of the decorative frame. On the Cielo Mini, face the light outlet toward the wall to avoid strong direct light, and keep the distance to the wall under 1.7 m.

Two Models, Two Ways to Light a Room

Both skylights share the same 598 x 434 x 190 mm body, 80W output, CRI Ra 90+ color rendering, and dimming. Where they differ is in color temperature, ceiling compatibility, and how they connect.

A Light That Follows Your Day

A room under a Cielo does not have to sit in one mood. Both models are dimmable, and on the Cielo you can run a bright sunlight scene during the day and an ultra-low moonlight scene in the evening. That makes the same ceiling work as a bright sky for a morning kitchen or a home office, and a soft glow for winding down.

The Cielo Mini goes a step further with tunable color temperature from 1600K to 8000K. Run the warm glow of sunrise in the morning, the cool blue of midday, and the amber of sunset in the evening, with dimming to match. For a household living through the darker months, that is a way to give a windowless room its own rhythm while the real sunset happens at 4:45 pm outside.

Both models are controlled over Bluetooth. To add voice and smart-home control, pair either one with a compatible gateway (sold separately). With a gateway, they work with Apple HomeKit, Google Assistant, and Amazon Alexa. The Cielo needs a Bluetooth mesh gateway.

Natural Color, Real Brightness

The Cielo Mini delivers 2100 lumens from 15 LEDs, bright and natural-feeling output for a recessed ceiling panel. Both models offer CRI Ra 90+, so skin tones, wood finishes, artwork, and plants look natural under the light rather than washed out. That is a real advantage in the rooms where people actually spend their winter: the kitchen table, the reading corner, the home office, the entrance hallway.

Where It Fits Into Everyday Life

Both models are recessed ceiling units, so they suit rooms where the ceiling can be planned around them. A few places they tend to make the biggest difference:

  • Entrance hallways: bring a clear sky into the first space you walk into after coming home
  • Living rooms: add a feature ceiling that feels like a private skylight
  • Studies, studios, and home offices: a calm, bright overhead light for reading and focused work
  • Children's rooms: a soft sky overhead, with moonlight mode on the Cielo or warm sunset tones on the Cielo Mini for the evening
  • Kitchens: a window-like focal point in a room with no outside view
  • Basements and interior rooms: the look of daylight in spaces where natural light never reaches
  • Indoor gardens and atriums (Cielo Mini): a grid of panels overhead brings angled daylight to plants and planters

Several units can also be installed together to cover a larger area. The Cielo is built to the 3060 standardized size, designed to match common integrated ceiling modules, and supports multi-joint installation so several units can sit side by side as one larger sky. The Cielo Mini can be installed in a grid too, such as a 2 x 2 layout. In a wide hallway, kitchen, or living room, that turns a single panel into a full window effect.

Built to Live in the Ceiling

Both skylights have a slim 19 cm body, a compact profile for tight ceiling cavities. The Cielo weighs 4.76 kg and calls for at least 20 cm of head clearance above the ceiling, so confirm that your ceiling can support the load before installation.

Mounting depends on the ceiling. On aluminum ceilings the Cielo is fitted by default and no opening is required. For gypsum and other non-aluminum ceilings, an accessory package is sold separately, containing 4 hanging brackets, 4 hanging assemblies, 4 hanging cords with rings, 2 safety cords, and a magnetic ornamental frame. The Cielo Mini fits both integrated and non-integrated ceilings.

Installation must be completed by a qualified electrician or contractor in accordance with local building and electrical codes. Coordinating with your contractor early is the best way to get a clean, confident result.

What to Confirm Before You Order

  • Your ceiling type: aluminum or gypsum for the Cielo, integrated or non-integrated for the Cielo Mini
  • For the Cielo, your preferred decorative frame: convex (636 x 327 mm) or inset (660 x 351 mm)
  • Head clearance of at least 20 cm above the ceiling, and a ceiling that can support the unit's weight
  • Whether you want a fixed 8000K sky-white tone (Cielo) or tunable 1600K to 8000K light (Cielo Mini)
  • Whether you want voice and smart-home control, which needs a compatible gateway sold separately
  • Whether one panel is enough or several joined units would suit the room better
  • Opening and frame dimensions, which C&C can confirm with you before anything is cut

Bring a Little Summer Indoors

A skylight will not change the weather, and it is not meant to replace real sunshine or a walk outside on a bright winter day. What it can do is make the spaces you live and work in feel lighter, more open, and more welcoming during the months when the outdoors is not doing that job for you. For anyone who misses a clear blue sky between October and April, that is a very good reason to look up.
