Interchangeable Trims and Configurations Explained
The FlexCore housing accepts both round and square trims without changing the rough-in. This means you can specify a single housing SKU for a project and select the trim shape at installation, or switch trim shapes later without re-cutting the ceiling.
Configurations determine how many light heads are mounted in one housing slot:
- Single: One COB head per housing. The most common configuration for general recessed lighting in any room.
- Double (6F1037, 2×12W): Two COB heads in one elongated housing. Suits corridors, shelving alcoves, and display walls where two adjacent beams are needed without separate rough-ins.
- Triple (8F1037, 3×12W): Three COB heads in one housing. Used for high-output linear accent strips and feature walls.
Each head in a multi-head configuration operates together. The double and triple models have a rectangular footprint and a single elongated ceiling cutout.
Choosing the Right Mounting Style
| Style | Code | Description | Best suited for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fixed | F | The light head points straight down and does not move | General ambient and downlighting where aim is not needed |
| Adjustable | A | The light head tilts and rotates for directional aiming | Accent lighting, artwork, display walls, feature lighting |
| Antiglare Fixed | AF | Fixed head with a deep-cone anti-glare reflector | Hospitality, residential, and any space where glare comfort is a priority |
| Antiglare Adjustable | AA | Adjustable head with anti-glare cone for directional use | Retail accent and hotel lobbies where aiming and visual comfort are both needed |
Choosing the Right Beam Angle
- 13°: Very tight accent for art, jewelry cases, and small feature objects. Creates high contrast and a defined pool of light.
- 24°: Medium accent beam for retail displays, architectural details, and focused task areas.
- 36°: General ambient beam, the most versatile choice for residential and light commercial downlighting.
- 60°: Wide ambient coverage. Best for high ceilings or when fewer fixtures are used to cover a larger area.
For multi-head configurations, the same beam angle applies to all heads in the housing.
Ra80 vs. Ra90: Which CRI to Choose
Both Ra80 and Ra90 options are available across the FlexCore series. The right choice depends on the application:
- Ra80: Suitable for general commercial, utility, and office lighting where color accuracy is not critical. Slightly more efficient and lower cost per unit.
- Ra90: Recommended for hospitality, residential living areas, retail displays, art galleries, and anywhere that materials, skin tones, or merchandise colors need to look accurate and natural.
Specify Ra80 or Ra90 at time of order. Both options are available across the full model range.
Choosing the Right Color Temperature
- 2700K: Warm white, cozy and inviting. Best for residential living areas, hospitality lounges, and warm retail environments.
- 3000K: Soft white, slightly crisper. Popular for kitchens, hotel rooms, and boutique retail.
- 3500K: Neutral white, balanced. Suits offices and multi-purpose spaces.
- 4000K: Cool white, clean and alert. Common in commercial retail and task areas.
- 5000K: Cool daylight, high contrast. Used in task-intensive commercial environments.
The 5CCT selector is set at installation. It does not require a separate SKU per CCT, reducing the number of line items on a project order.
Where to Use It and Layout Tips
- Hallways and corridors: Fixed or adjustable single heads at 2-inch or 3-inch. The interchangeable trim allows a consistent ceiling appearance across different zones of a building.
- Kitchens and living rooms: 3-inch or 4-inch with 36° beam at 2700K to 3000K for warm ambient coverage. Dimmable for flexible everyday use.
- Retail and showrooms: Adjustable or antiglare adjustable heads at 13° to 24° with Ra90 for merchandise accuracy. Double and triple configurations for linear display walls without multiple separate rough-ins.
- Hospitality: Antiglare fixed heads at 2700K to 3000K for comfortable, glare-free ambiance in guest rooms, corridors, and dining areas.
- Offices: Fixed heads at 36° with 3500K to 4000K for even task lighting. Wide 60° beam reduces fixture count on open-plan floors.
The interchangeable trim is especially useful on projects where the ceiling design has not been finalized at rough-in stage, as the trim shape can be selected at finish without any structural changes.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I swap from a round to a square trim after installation?
Yes. The housing accepts both round and square trims without modification. Simply remove the existing trim and fit the replacement. The ceiling cutout does not change.
What is the difference between the C-series and B-series models?
Both are single-head round COB downlights sharing the same sizes and wattages. The B-series has a slightly different housing profile and height, which affects the look on the ceiling and the depth into the cavity. Check the dimension table in "Specifications at a Glance" for exact measurements before specifying.
Can the beam angle be changed after installation?
Beam angle is set by the optic at time of order. It cannot be changed in the field without replacing the optic module. Select the beam angle for your intended application before ordering.
Do the double and triple configurations have independently controllable heads?
The spec sheet does not list independent head control. All heads in a multi-head unit operate together on one circuit. Contact us to confirm control options for your project.
Is the 347V option available on all models?
The 347V input option is listed as optional across the series. Confirm availability for your specific model at time of order.
