How Automated Stair Lighting Works

The principle behind every good motion-activated stair system is the same: hide the source, and let the light respond to the person. Concealed LED strip is run beneath or along each tread so occupants see an illuminated staircase, not a row of obvious fixtures. A motion sensor detects someone entering the zone, the controller wakes the strip, and the steps light in sequence as the person climbs or descends. When the staircase clears, the lights fade out on a timer.

What separates a considered installation from a plug-and-play kit is direction awareness. A single sensor can only see one end of the flight. Placing a sensor at both the top and the bottom lets the system know which way a person is travelling and run the cascade in the correct direction, up when someone climbs from the ground floor, down when they descend from the landing. What the Controller Actually Does

A single Bluetooth-enabled unit drives up to 30 individually wired step ports, meaning each tread is addressed on its own for true per-step sequencing rather than a single strip switched as one block. Two dedicated flash LED ports handle accent or edge-lighting zones alongside the main run, compatible with 2811, 1903, and 16703P IC types.

Setup runs through four onboard buttons or the companion mobile app. The A button sets the flash strip pixel count, the B button sets step quantity and strip sequence, the C button adjusts brightness and speed, and the D button selects the lighting mode. Power is DC24V in and out, and the two motion sensors run on their own DC5V ports, Sensor A watching the downstairs approach and Sensor B the upstairs. Short-circuit protection is built into the unit.

The system ships with 18 built-in induction lighting modes, including all-bright, meteor trail, chasing, and running-water effects, with more than 200 additional modes available through the app. That range lets the same hardware read as restrained and architectural in a luxury residence or playful and dynamic in a feature space, without changing a single component.
